Discoveries:

Today I discovered that Chicago is calling my name. I don’t know if it’s the lakefront breeze, the phenomenal food or that amazing skyline, I have started reminiscing and all week that nostalgia has hit me. I have been absent from my city of birth for nearly 6 years and while Dallas is my new residence Chicago will always be home. Whenever I visit I get the sense that anything is possible with the right amount of money and a really great idea. This year I am making that trek with the family up the interstate and taking a road trip. Every couple of years we decide on the near thousand mile trip we learn more about lives and ourselves. Like the journey, the last several years have been quite the passage. Imagine the fortitude it takes to drive twelve hours, through four states, non-stop, just to reach your destination. Fuel costs are soaring, there’s a heat wave sweeping the nation and we almost always have too little time to see and do everything we set out to do in our great city but in the end, it’s all worth it. Chicago, here I come!

High Points:

A few blogs back I stated that I wanted to experience driving an eco-friendly, fuel efficient foreign car to be the true judge of whether or not the sacrifice of styling and power was worth the benefits of fuel efficiency and dependability. Well, I got my chance. I rented a 2012 Toyota Camry with Eco-Boost. Truly, it sounds more extravagant than it really is. For the next week or so I will bend curbs and whip it hard, whip it, whip it real hard. The truth is that it’s probably time for me to make a responsible choice for my next vehicle. I’ve owned a variety of cars: Gangster Cutlass, Sporty Pontiac, Po-Po Taurus, Old Man Van, Classic Jaguar and even a luxury Chrysler but never a car that appealed primarily to my financial sensibilities. There might be a hybrid in my near future.

Themes for the Day

·         What’s the MPG on this one?
·         Of course, I’d love to test drive…
·         What is the Blue Book resale value?
·         Does it come with a sunroof and navigation?
·         How long is the bumper-to-bumper warranty?

Low Points:

My babies are no longer babies; my kids are becoming young men. Our parents were right, they do grow up fast. Thank God for pictures, without photographs how else would we be able to justly invoke all of the complex emotions we experience when we actually see them? A good picture is worth a thousand words. I wonder which words come to your mind when you look below.

DAILY INSANITY:

Four Words: Fifty Shades of Grey

I broke down and purchased a copy of E.L James graphic novel that is sweeping the nation entitled 50 Shades of Grey. As I understand it, this book has sold more than ten million copies. No book since Harry Potter has had that sort of impact in the book market in this electronic era. I simply had to find out what all the buzz was about.
