Discoveries:

Today I discovered that we must remember. Memorial Day is rooted in that magnificent word. How easy do we forget the past? For some, forgetting is a simple as closing a door but many times small doors open up into large rooms. We all have many ugly, dirty, beautiful wonderful, scary, frightening, happy, heart-warming memories that we must recollect. If not for now, for later.  Whether they were a soldier or lost relative, a long-time friend of close family member. Today is the day that we honor them by allowing their memory to fill our hearts and minds. So do what you must, in decency, to show the fallen just how much they live on in you.

High Points:

I reached a milestone this weekend. I’ve lived on this earth long enough to watch the generation that seceded mine graduate, from high school that is. There were (4) graduates in total. It feels like just yesterday I was that optimistic young mind with a bright future and world of possibility ahead of him. One of my friends oldest son finished high school and I was blessed with an invitation to his graduation slash birthday slash barbeque slash everything get-together to celebrate the achievement. There was lots of great Creole cooking, good company and conversation. Aside from the eats, the highlight of the afternoon happened when all the elders of the family sat down this amazing young man and gave him advice. We all pitched in our two cents. We covered a surplus of topics including but not limited to dorm life, sex, relationships, studying, careers, drugs and staying focused. Unlike me when I was that same age, they actually soaked in our counsel, like sponges. The sad thing about sponges is that they can be rung out. I hope they soak up some of our counsel because life in today’s era is much harder than it was fifteen years ago.

Low Points:

So this past week I was bitten by the new car bug. It left a large mark in my mind. I love my American-built semi-luxury sedan. Chrysler truly put so much into the 300 model but Lord knows it drinks gas! I remember a previous blog post where I declared that the next vehicle I purchased would be an eco-friendly hybrid that achieved at least a 30 MPG rating. Well, this week I decided to seriously start shopping for said vehicle. I had three vehicles in mind. The Honda Insight, Toyota Prius and Nissan Versa, all ranking high on Motor Trends top picks list. While I was pleased with the economic advantages of owning a smarter car what I absolutely detested was the sacrifices that needed to be made in the areas of comfort and performance. Now perhaps I have a lead foot but there is something gratifying about being able to reach sixty miles per hour in a reasonable amount of time. Be warned, if you want fuel economy get used to driving like you’re in a parade. I either test drove or kept all three vehicles overnight to see if they would grow on my and after careful consideration the only fuel conscious hybrid I would purchase would be Honda’s Insight. It truly exceeded my expectations. Check the car out online and give me a few pointers about what I should also consider before I make my purchase.

DAILY INSANITY:
One Word: Marinate

The best barbeque is the properly seasoned kind, the longer the meat marinates the better. One sign that you are about to ingest some nasty barbeque is when you see the chef seasoning the ribs, chicken, chops, links and burgers while it’s on the grill. Boo for them.

The best grilling tips are, after properly defrosting stored foodstuffs, find an already-lit and fired-up grill, place items on it and cook thoroughly. When ready, consume completely, drink a tasty beverage, burp and go to sleep afterward.

One of my old secrets is adding beer or a nice ale to your marinade. I put a can of flavored ale inside a turkey for Thanksgiving, it made the meat fall off the bone juicy. Don't forget the most important seasoning in your arsenal next Lawry's is garlic and lemon juice.
