My Kind of Town

Editor’s Note:

This week instead of interviewing a guest I hosted a special ART CRY RADIO hot topic show. It was an ode to Chicago. The Windy City is the place where it all started for me. I learned about Art from working in the Harold Washington Library on the 8th floor. There one can find literally thousands of books featuring photography, painting, music, poetry and cinema.

I took calls from Chicagoans and we discussed the good, bad and ugly parts of town. We discussed food, fashion and fun. One of the more memorable callers mentioned getting Maxwell Street polish sausages and authentic Asian cuisine from the Chinatown neighborhood of Chicago near Cermak road. I can remember taking the Red Line to Chinatown or the Dan Ryan to Three Happiness Restaurant. They served the best Mongolian Beef and Crab Rangoon!

We also talked about how the city has changed from being an oasis of urban cool filled with families who embraced love and had a sense of community to a defunct pool of hopelessness filled with crime. Teenagers barely old enough to drive are armed street soldiers who terrorize communities and make turn perfectly good city blocks into war zones.  Who knows what the root cause is, I don’t think we particularly care unless knowing somehow helps us defend our children and families against this lunacy.

To lighten the mood I played funny clips from movies I grew up watching and featured feel good music from products of Chicago like ELLI$ and Yaw. At the end of the day, I exited the airwaves feeling good about the overall reflection that is Chicago. But don’t take my word for it, go back and listen to the show for yourself:

“No house should ever be on a hill or on anything. It should be of the hill. Belonging to it. Hill and house should live together each the happier for the other.”
