Vacation Body Reunited

Discoveries:

This week I discovered that good vacations are always in order. If you are anything like me you revel in opportunities to see new places and kick back but the experience is so much more than that. Somehow a new and different place helps you let your guard down and take life as it comes. The anxiety involved with making a wrong turn and ending up lost in a city you barely know coupled with the sanctity your resort digs into your soul and creates the perfect balance between familiarity and balance. This week I decided to take a vacation with my family so we could rediscover one another and solidify our connection. It will also mark two very important commencements. My wife and I will be empty nesters and my son will begin his journey into manhood. The odd truth is that I now realize that my first born son will be moving out of the house in another four years and my youngest son will be prepping for high school. These are the golden moments of parenthood and also a chance for us to reinvent of ourselves.

High Points:

My college body is knocking on the front door and yelling “I’m back” – Well, almost. I have been slimming down and toning up. In fact, even my family doctor made mention of my drastic change. She wanted to know what I was doing get back into shape. Initially I was offended though. Did I really let myself go? It’s easy for a person with naturally high self-confidence and a high sense of self-worth to overlook gradual changes with their body. I guess she was correct. A year ago this time I was a stocky 245lbs and on my way to a size 40 pants. Now I fit comfortably in a size 36 (which my wife loves by the way because it hugs my man parts) and I am a trim 217lbs. I knew I’d changed because last year I could barely get up and down the basketball court during pickup games but now I’m catching alley-oops and playing for hours on end. Yay me!

TOP FIVE COOL THINGS ABOUT GETTING YOUR COLLEGE BODY BACK

1.      You still look like you’re in college!
2.      You don’t look as silly in slim fit jeans and V-necks
3.      Your spouse can’t keep their hands off of you…
4.      You can finally keep up with the high school and college athletes
5.      People flirt with you and give you compliments

Low Points

I missed my family reunion. I was really looking forward to attending but the event happened to fall during the same week as my vacation and if it had not been for the fact that I prepaid for the full week in advance to get a discount I would have gone. The event was held in Illinois and despite the 14 hour drive it would have took to be in attendance I am a road warrior. I don’t feel so bad though, my cousins and Facebook helped me relive the experience from afar. I saw photos with my uncle dancing, my cousins laughing and my grandparents chilling. I am sure it would have been a great thing to see. Maybe next year!

DAILY INSANITY:
One Word: Poolside
I do not currently own a pool, perhaps that’s why I spent half of my trip poolside soaking up rays and doing laps. Water is a wonderful unwinding agent and I absolutely love her. She can never be too cold or too deep. I play volleyball and Marco Polo then at the end of the day she is still. I am heading back now!
